PIQUA – A motorist alerted Miami County 911 to an alleged impaired motorist driving on Young Street around 2 p.m. on Monday.

Piqua police officers spotted the vehicle, a Jeep SUV pulled to the curb in front of a driveway in the 900 block of Young Street, near Upway Drive.

Officers saw a subject slumped over the wheel with the vehicle still in “Drive”, his foot apparently on both the gas and brake. Officer Adam Kempel managed to get the vehicle into “Park”, at which point it was noticed that the vehicle was burning.

Officers Kempel and Yount dragged the unresponsive male subject from the burning vehicle and began performing CPR.

Firefighters and medics from the Piqua Fire Department arrived on the scene. While medics revived the victim, firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire.

The male was transported to Upper Valley Medical Center.

Police are investigating to determine if a drug overdose may have played a role in the incident.
