MIAMI COUNTY — Sheriff-elect Dave Duchak was sworn in as acting sheriff Tuesday morning, following the death of Miami County Sheriff Charles Cox.
Miami County Commissioners voted Tuesday to designate and appoint Duchak, Cox’s chief deputy, to finish the seven-term sheriff’s unexpired term. Cox passed away Nov. 10.
Moments after the vote, Duchak was sworn in by county prosecutor Tony Kendell.
“I am sorry it had to be under these circumstances,” Duchak said after his swearing in. “But I appreciate all of the support.”
Duchak won the race for sheriff in the Nov. 8 general election. He won the Republican primary last March against three candidates and won in November against Independent candidate Joe Mahan.
Cox passed away with less than two months remaining in his term, after several years of ill health. In 2015, he would not seek an eighth term in office. He was elected to seven consecutive terms and served 28 years as sheriff.
Services for Cox are planned Nov. 22, at Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church near Tipp City.
