Well, here we are in June already! It’s finally starting to feel like summer here in Newberry Township, and with the coming heat, we have a few summer activities scheduled here in Covington to let you know about. First, please allow me congratulate all the graduates of the CHS class of 2015. Fifty or so Buccaneer classmates received their diplomas two weeks ago, and are headed out into what we adults call “real life.” I am told they are an excellent group of young people, so I have no doubt that they can and will be successful. The Covington community wishes them all the very best of luck!
This year’s Covington community Vacation Bible School is called “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power.” It will be held in two weeks, from June 22-26, at the Covington Church of the Brethren. The folks of St. John’s Lutheran are in charge of heading it up this year, but are always seeking more volunteers from the community. Please contact Kate Shaffer at (937) 214-0518 or Rachel Larson at (937) 418-7051 if you would like to help. The Vacation Bible schoolers will meet from 9 a.m until noon each day, with a picnic and program to conclude the VBS week on Friday evening. Please contact Kate or Rachel for more information, or to sign up your children or grandchildren. They have no doubt that this year’s Bible school will be “mountains of fun!”
It’s also almost time for the annual Covington Bucc Boosters Golf Scramble. This year’s event will be held at Echo Hills Golf Course in Piqua on Saturday, June 27, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. The fee to participate is $60 per golfer or $240 per four-person team. Included in one’s entry fee is the greens fee, cart, prize raffle, and dinner afterward.
There are also opportunities for local businesses and individuals to sponsor the event at different levels. And the field is limited, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To sponsor, play, donate, or volunteer to help, please contact Bob Supinger at (513) 266-2029 or Glen Hollopeter at (937) 214-2255. Deadline to enter is this Friday, June 12. Please make your check payable to the Bucc Boosters, and mail it to P.O. Box 231, Covington, or drop it off to Glen at Koverman-Staley-Dickerson Insurance on Wright Street.
All funds raised by the Bucc Boosters will be put back into the Covington community in support of our Buccaneer athletic teams and programs. We have a great group of folks supporting the student-athletes here in Covington, and that is reflected in the continued successes of our programs. The Golf Scramble is a major fundraiser for the Boosters. So please, if you are able, get a group of friends or alumni together, and come out and have fun to support our Buccs. Awards will be given out for the winning teams — low gross and low net, longest drive, longest putt, and closest to the pin. And even though there will be awards for the best golfers, Glen says that actual golfing skills are not really required to join in and have a great time. And he should know.
I am able to spotlight Covington two times per month here in the Piqua Daily Call, so feel free to forward me your Covington news via email to [email protected], or call me at (937) 418-8884.comments powered by Disqus
