TIPP CITY — Covington’s Carly Shell was feeling some nerves before her race Saturday at the Tippecanoe Invitaitonal.

Miami East’s Megan Kinnison — with the help of teammate Karson Mahaney — rode the wind in the discus and continued her excellence.

Both recorded wins — with Miami East leading local teams with a fourth-place finish with 65 points.

Covington was sixth with 60 and Piqua finished 16th with 6 points.

Kinnison and Mahaney — who both placed in the shot put as well — finished 1-2 in the discus for the Lady Vikings.

Kinnison won with a distance of 117-0 and Mahaney was second with throw of 97-9.

“It is just amazing,” Kinnison said about the duo. “Karson (Mahaney) helps me so much. I couldn’t do it without her.”

Kinnison, who advanced to the state meet a year ago, has continued her excellence this season.

That despite some windy, cold conditions.

“The meet at Northwestern earlier this year was tough, but I think this was worse,” Kinnison said. “It is really tough to throw on a day like this. I threw 118 last week at Troy. I just tried to let the wind help me. Considering I was just off a PR, I would say I was pretty happy with today.”

Marie Ewing had a second-place finish for the Lady Vikings in the 800, 2:32.22; while finishing third were Jilian Wesco, long jump, 14-5 1-4; Kaitlyn Mack, 300 hurdles, 52.28; and the 1,600 relay (Lindsey Yingst, Emma Monnin, Abby Horne, Ewing), 4:36.03.

It might surprise you that Shell — one of the dominant distance runners in the areas — would be feeling anything but confident before the 3,200 run.

“Actually, I was pretty nervous,” Shell said. “I hadn’t run that race since my sophomore year. I had been working toward it and coach told me I could run the race today.”

Given the weather conditions, she may have had second thoughts. But, Shell cruised to victory in 12:12.05.

“Maybe now, I wish I hadn’t run the race today,” she said with a laugh. “I could deal with the cold, but the wind was really tough out there. The wind was definitely the hardest part. But, I am happy with the way I ran.”

Anna Dunn had a strong showing for the Buccs in the 1,600, finishing second to Troy standout Morgan Gigandet in 5:36.89. She also teamed with Shell, Ashlyn Plessinger and Paige Boehringer for second in the 3,200 relay, 10:25.92; while freshman Laura Hebert added a third in the shot put, 34-2 1-2.

Piqua was led by Amy Burt’s fourth-place finish in the long jump, 14-5.
