TROY — The Miami East wrestling team had an outstanding performance at the Division III District Tournament at Troy’s Hobart Arena over the weekend as it finished third in the team standings with 87.5 team points and qualified four wrestlers to next week’s state wrestling meet in Columbus.
Graham Shore put together an impressive tournament by winning the 113 pound weight class. He captured wins over Preston Brubaker of Columbus Grove, Spencer Enderle of East Knox and Kobe Cunningham of Lima Central Catholic to advance to the championship match against Tommy Hoskins of Dayton Christian.
And what a thrilling championship match it was as neither wrestler could gain the advantage after three periods of wrestling. With the score tied 2-2, the match went into sudden victory and Shore struck gold with a takedown and three back points to secure the 7-2 win and a district title.
Joining Shore at state are Alex Isbrandt, Zane Strubler and Ben Ferguson.
After winning their first two matches on Friday, both Isbrandt and Ferguson suffered stunning defeats in the championship semifinals and had to battle back in the consolation rounds to take third in their respective weight classes.
Isbrandt defeated Dylan Schenck of Milton-Union 10-1 in his consolation semifinal match and then captured a 4-0 win over Josh Clary of Dayton Christian to take third at 126 pounds.
Ferguson pinned Cameron Coffman of Dixie in the consolation semifinals and then pinned Brandon Cox of North Union in 1:53 for third place at 285 pounds.
The final Viking wrestler to qualify for state was Zane Strubler, who finished fourth at 132 pounds after coming up just short a year ago.
Strubler went 1-1 on the first day of the tournament and had to battle hard through the consolation bracket to punch his ticket to state. He came back with a vengeance, pinning Tyler Bentley of Carlisle and then defeating Ben Boggs of Northwestern by the score of 11-0 to put himself in a go-to-state match against Schuyler Caprella of Allen East.
And Strubler came through in crutch time, pulling away from Caprella with three critical back points to take a 9-4 win and secure his spot in the state championships.
