Piqua boyslose to Wayne

CENTERVILLE — The top-ranked, undefeated and defending state champion Wayne boys basketball team was too much for Piqua in the Centerville D-I sectional final Friday night at Centerville High School.

Wayne jumped out to a 20-0 lead, before Piqua got back within 43-24 at halftime.

The Warriors pulled away in the second half to win 97-47.

Nate Monnin led Piqua with 13 points, while CJ Davis had 11 and Ben Schmiesing added eight.

Colton Bachman finished his career as Piqua’s all-time leading scorer with 1,569 points.

The Indians finished the season at 14-11, their third straight winning season, while Wayne improved to 25-0.

SWIMMING

Tiger relay

takes fifth

CANTON — The Versailles girls swimmig team made one trip to the podium at the D-II state swim meet Friday night at C.T. Branin Natatorium.

The 200 free relay (Ashlyn Cordonier, Rachel Subler, Abbey Marshal, Lexi Fliehman) finished fifth in 1:39.45.

Fliehman finished 12th in the 100 freestyle in 53.68 and was DQ’d in the 50 freestyle.

The 200 medley relay (Marshal, Heather Albers, Cordonnier, Fliehman) finished 15th in 1:52.61.

In Thursday’s semifinals, Fliehman had the third fastest time in the 50 freestyle, 23.88; and 10th fastest time in the 100 freestyle, 53.20; while Marshal had the 23rd fastest time in the 100 breaststroke, 1:10.44.

The 200 freestyle relay (Cordonnier, Subler, Marshal, Fliehman) had the fifth fastest time, 1:39.69; while 200 medley relay (Marshal, Albers, Cordonnier, Fliehman) had the 13th fastest time, 1:51.65.

COLUMBUS — The Versailles bowling team finished 13th in the Division II state bowling tournament Friday at Wayne Webb Lanes in Columbus.

The Tigers finished with a 3,3335 total.

Versailles scores included Luke Shellhaas 193-21-218—623, Alex Groff 217-183-187—587, Brody Hyre 202-167-217—586 and Kyle Cotner 154-224-181—559.
