TROY — The Piqua wrestling team seemed to have the momentum — despite giving up 18 points in forfeits (losing four matches by forfeit and winning one) against Troy Wednesday night at Troy High School.
But after Sam Herndon’s pin at 113 pounds in 2:18 closes Piqua to within 36-22, Troy won the next three matches to seal a 48-28 win.
Two of those three matches were one-point wins for Troy, including one where Piqua had a four-point lead with 20 seconds to go.
“We knew every match had to go our way,” Piqua coach Scott Kaye said. “Those are matches we had to have.”
The matches had started at 145 and at 152, Brennan Hicks won an 18-6 major decision, while Clayton Crowell (170) won by forfeit.
At 285, Jake Hetzler recorded a pin in 1:26 and Herndon followed with a pin.
“We knew we needed to start fast,” Kaye said. “And it I thought we did that. Brennan (Hicks) had a big wins for us. But, then things fell apart at the end — those were matches we had to have.”
Andrew Bolin (138) finished the night with his second pin, with the fall coming at 1:44.
“Andrew (Bolin) wrestled strong,” Kaye said. “I thought we had a lot of guys that did.”
In the opening match, Piqua defeated Greenville 34-18.
Bolin started things with a pin in 3:31.
Hetzler picked up a forfeit win and Herndon recorded a 5-3 decision.
The match was tied at 18 going to the final three matches, all won by Piqua.
Nick Baker (120) had a 14-4 major decision, while Tristan Hostetter (126) had a forfeit win and Jesse Ceyler (132) finished the match with a pin in 3:39.
But, the highlight of the night was Crowell (160) recording his first varsity win.
“This was only the second event he has wrestled in,” Kaye said about Crowell, who also wrestled at the GWOC last weekend.
After trailing early, he recorded an 18-12 decision.
“It was great for him to get a win,” Kaye said. “I don’t think he knew he had it in him until he actually did it.”
Piqua is off until the Division I sectional tournament Feb. 19-20 at Centerville.
Piqua will compete in the Centerville 2 sectional with Beavercreek, Belmont, Fairborn, Fairmont, Lakota West, Miamisburg, Middletown Tecumseh, Vandalia-Butler, Wayne and Xenia.
The top four in each weight class will advance on to the district tournament.
