SIDNEY — The Lehman girls basketball team — while still young — is turning a corner.

The Piqua girls are still trying to get there.

That combination led to a 56-30 Lehman victory over the Lady Indians Monday night in non-conference action.

While Piqua dropped to 3-16 on the season, Lehman improved to 8-10.

And while the Lady Cavaliers start a freshman, two sophomores and a junior — coach Craig Hall sees a team that is starting to show its potential.

“I think so,” Hall said. “I think I finally figured out how they like to play. This is a good time too, with the tournament coming up.”

Lehman post Hannah Fogt scored eight points in the first 2:48 of the game Monday — and Brogan McIver added a three as the Lady Cavaliers jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead and never looked back.

“She (Hannah Fogt) is long in there and she did a good job when she got the ball of finishing,” Piqua coach Brian Gillespie said. “”I didn’t feel like we put up much resistance on defense. We have to do a better job of that.”

The Lady Cavaliers led 22-7 after one quarter, with Fogt scoring 12 herself — and stretched the led to 34-11 at half and 46-20 after three quarters before both teams emptied the bench.

“The first half did it to us again,” Gillespie said. “Again, it is about consistency. We need to come out from the start and show who we are. Even in the third quarter, I thought we missed a lot of shots. We had a chance to make this game closer than it was.”

Lehman’s quick, uptempo style and efficiency on offense — with a year’s more experience — showed no resemblance to the team that struggled a year ago.

“Another big thing is we have numbers this year,” Hall said. “We have competition in practice at every postion and we didn’t have that before.”

Fogt finished with a game-high 16 points and six rebounds for the Lady Cavaliers.

Monnin had eight ponts and four steals, while Kassie Lee scored seven points and Allie Hall had six points, six rebounds and six assists. McIver also scored six points.

Lauren Williams led Piqua with six points, while Kelsey Bachman and Lily Stewart both scored five.

Williams had three rebounds and two steals, while Stewart dished out three assists and Mikayla Schaffner had three rebounds.

Lehman was 22 of 60 from the floor — including three of nine from 3-point range and converted nine of 14 free throws.

Piqua was 10 of 44 from the floor, missing all eight 3-point attempts. The Lady Indians made 11 of 14 from the line.

Lehman won the battle of the boards 32-14 and committed just eight turnovers to Piqua’s 14.

Piqua will host Sidney Wednesday, while Lehman will host Arcanum Saturday.
