Covington, Russia girls post victories on hardwood

ANSONIA — The Covington girls bounced back from a non-conference loss to Miami East in the Barnball Classic with a 58-41 win over Ansonia in CCC action Monday.

“It is always nice to get back on the court in a conference game atmosphere following a tough loss in holiday tournament championship,” Covington coach Craig Maschino said. “It’s been eight days since that game. We needed to get back at it to get that sour taste out of our mouths.”

One key was the defense of Rayna Horner.

“We knew we had to defend Brooke Neal,” Maschino said. “She is a shooter and averages right at 16 points per game. She can shoot the 3 pretty well. Rayna Horner had the defensive assignment tonight and she accepted the challenge. Rayna used her quickness to shadow Neal the entire game. She held her scoreless until about 4:30 left in the game. I told Rayna if she didn’t get any stat at all in the stat column tonight, I was okay with that as long as Neal didn’t score. That would be the best thing she could do for her team. She did exactly what I asked if her.”

Maschino also liked his team’s offense.

“Coming in to tonight, we knew we had to be aggressive and execute offensively,” he said. “Sammi Whiteman and Jessie Crowell really played nice games. Sammi played a great defensive game which resulted in easy transition baskets for her. She also did a nice job of penetrating their defense and scoring in the paint. Jess had a nice bounce back game tonight. She’s been off a little with her shot of late. She seemed to find it tonight.

“Our defensive pressure really created offense for us most of the night. We forced 27 turnovers and had a number of deflections that really kept Ansonia out of sync offensively.”

Whiteman led Covington with 25 points.

Crowell scored 22 and Brooke Gostomsky added nine.

Covington, 9-3 overall and 6-3 in the CCC, will play at Milton-Union Monday.
