Covington’s high school wrestling team finished in second place at the Versailles Invitational on Saturday. The Buccs went 4-1 overall, defeating Versailles B, 57-10, Tri-County North, 81-0, St. Mary’s, 58-20 and Arcanum, 68-9, before falling to Versailles in the finals, 37-24.

Going 5-0 for Covington were Connor Ryan (113 lbs, 2 pins), Coleman Ryan (120, pin), Jared Ford (126, 2 pins), Keringten Martin (132, pin), Ryan Ford (145, 3 pins) and Gage DeHart (152, 2 pins).

Finishing with 4-1 records were Lance Miller (160/170, 2 pins) and Brandon Magee (182/195, 3 pins), while Deron White (160, 3-1, 2 pins), Joey Schmelzer (170/182, 3-2, 2 pins) and Seth Thomas (220, 3-2, 3 pins) finished with winning records on the day.

Also winning matches for the Buccs were Alexis Roth (106), Parker Dysinger (138) and Carl Lankford (285). Riley Richards (126), Josh Sowers (145), Branden Robinson (152) and Ross Bowman (160) all won JV matches for the team. Covington travels to Miami East on Wednesday, December 23, for a tri with the Vikings and Mechanicsburg at 6 pm.

Covington’s Jr. High wrestling team put in an outstanding performance in winning the 17-team Sidney Invitational with 264 points to runner-up Sidney’s 255. The teams were within 3 points of each other heading into the final round of placement matches, but the Buccs ran away with it in the finals, winning 11 of their 12 placement matches.

Covington set a school record for the highest finish and most placers at the tournament. In addition to the 12 varsity wrestlers who placed, the Buccs had an additional two wrestlers finish in the top-eight.

Taking home the title for Covington were Cael Vanderhorst (92 lbs, 5-0, 5 pins), Austin Flick (128, 5-0, 3 pins), Gage Kerrigan (160 lbs, 5-0, 5 pins) and Grant Babylon (245, 5-0, 4 pins).

Taking 3rd were Logan Lowe (110, 4-1, 4 pins), Trentin Alexander (128, 4-1, 2 pins), Cade Schmelzer (150, 3-1, 3 pins) and Dylan Staudt (205, 4-1, 3 pins), while Bryce Smith (98, 3-2, 3 pins) finished 4th.

Jesse Fisher (150, 4-1, 3 pins) finished in 5th place, while Devin Newhouse (80), Hunter Clarkson (134, 3-2, pin), Colton Francis (142, 3-2, 2 pins) and Joseph Franke (172, 3-2, 2 pins) placed 7th.

Also competing well for the Buccs were David Robinson (104, pin), Gavin Swank (116, pin), Fletcher Metz (122, pin) and Seth Iddings (134).

Covington’s Jr. High team competes next at the Best of the Midwest Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.
