COVINGTON — It was not a Rembrandt by any means.

But, Covington coach Jim Meyer wasn’t complaining after seeing his Lady Buccs team improve to 3-0 with a 57-46 win over Franklin Monroe Tuesday at Covington High School in the CCC opener for both teams.

“I told the girls, some wins are good wins and some girls are ugly wins,” Meyer said after the game. “This was an ugly win. But, the girls gutted it out and found a way to get a win.”

After leading Franklin Monroe 25-19 at halftime, the Buccs did not surrender a field goal until Chloe Brumbaugh’s basket with 7:18 to go in the fourth quarter.

The only problem was, Covington sent Franklin Monroe to the line 18 times in the second half, with the Jets converting 13 of them.

“Part of that is not knowing when to back off and when to attack,” Meyer said. “And that’s on the coaches to teach them that. We are still early in the relationship with this team. We are not even a month in. That is something we are working on. But, the kids stepped up when we needed them to in the fourth quarter and made plays.”

Sammi Whiteman scored 13 of her 23 points in the final quarter and Jordan Crowell hit a three after grabbing an offensive rebound and made four straight free throws down the stretch to finish with 17 points.

“Sammi (Whiteman) just has the ability to get to the basket,” Meyer said. “Jordan, sometimes I think she has icewater in her veins to hit some of the shots she hits.”

That kept Franklin Monroe from ever making a serious run at the Buccs.

The game had started with the Jets taking an 8-3 lead, before Covington began to turn things around with pressure on the FM guards.

Covington got back within 12-11 after one quarter and led 25-19 at halftime.

Addison Metz, who was coming off a 16-point game against Fairlawn, sparked the Bucccs with four points in the opening quarter, while Whiteman and Crowell both scored six in the first half and helped Covington take control in the second quarter.

“We talked about getting off to a good start — which we didn’t,” Meyer said. “But, we did a good job recovering. We were up six at half and stretched it to 11 after three quarters.”

Brumbaugh finished with 17 points, while Corina Conley had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Kennedy Morris added seven rebounds for FM, while Crowell and Tori Lyle both grabbed six rebounds for Covington.

“That is young team that is really going to be something,” Meyer said about Franklin Monroe. “Maybe, by the end of this year.”

Covington was 16 of 37 from the floor for 43 percent and 21 of 39 from the line for 54 percent, while Franklin Monroe was 14 of 44 from the floor for 32 percent and 18 of 28 from the line for 64 percent.

“I told the girls they have two minutes to forget this game and start getting ready for Twin Valley South (Thursday),” Meyer said. “But, for us to be 3-0 at this point, that is awesome.”

Which is pretty as any picture can get.
