A neat and very scenic Covington event takes place in just a few weeks. The Covington Outreach Association (COA) will be sponsoring its ninth annual 5K Run and Walk “By the River” on Saturday, July 16, at 8 a.m. The 5K run and walk will begin near the Stillwater Community Church at the intersection of Sugar Grove and Owens roads. Or the address is 7900 W. Sugar Grove Road, Covington, for those using a GPS. Parking will be available at and around the church. Please plan to join all the supporters of the COA for this “slightly more challenging” and scenic race under the trees by the Stillwater River.
Registration forms are available by emailing [email protected] or by calling 473-2415. Every participant who pre-registers will receive a T-shirt on the day of the event. The pre-registration entry fee is $15 (including aforementioned shirt) through July 5. On-site same day registration will cost $20 (with no T-shirt provided) on the morning of the race, commencing at 7 a.m. All proceeds of the 5K support the outreach ministries of Covington Outreach Association (COA). Please make plans to join the fun along the banks of the Painter Creek and Stillwater River. And as an avid biker and kayaker myself, who enjoys these pursuits throughout Newberry and Newton townships, this really is one of the most scenic and beautiful areas of Miami County. It is a picturesque place for a 5K race for a good cause.
Another neat Covington event for another, but similar, very worthy cause also takes place that day, Saturday, July 16. That event is the Christmas in July Golf Scramble and Fundraiser, in memory of Staci Jo Blythe. It will again be held at the Stillwater Valley Golf Club near Webster, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. All proceeds of the scramble will go to help needy kids in our area at Christmas.
Last year, the golfers helped needy kids at the University of Dayton who participated in their “Christmas on Campus” activities. Donations were also made to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus for children who receive cancer treatment at The James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University. This will be the sixth year for this event, and so far, the fundraiser has helped more than 1,000 children.
The golf scramble is put on each year by the Blythe family in memory of their beloved daughter and sister, Staci Jo Blythe. Staci celebrated the birth of Jesus and being around family at Christmas each year. Putting a smile on a child’s face was the icing on the cake to her. Staci would do this even during her battle with the health struggles she valiantly fought.
Entries and donations for the scramble must be received by July 12. Hole sponsorships are available for $50 per hole. Entry and sponsorship forms are available on Stillwater Valley’s website, stillwatervalleygolfclub.com., and may also be picked up at the golf course. The fee structure varies with respect to one’s membership at Stillwater Valley, but $60 is the maximum entry fee, and it is all for a great cause. Completed forms and payment may be mailed to Stillwater Valley Golf Club at 9235 Seibt Road, Versailles, OH 45380.
And the day before these fundraising events, I will see you at the next monthly Covington Christian Church salad luncheon, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, July 15.
