A sprucing up

Provided photo The Green Leaf Garden Club planted four different types of daffodils along the bike path just above French Park on Oct. 17. They were assisted by a city park employee and four members of the community. Pictured are Penny Adams, Karen McNeil, Artie Parker, Judy Quinter, Betty Thompson, Ben Gover, Karen Raggon, Teckla Powell and Roland Kellar. Also assisting with the project were Ruth Cameron and Bill McNeil. Previously, club members had cleared the area of honeysuckle and debris. The ground being an old railroad bed, workers found the digging to be quite difficult and used spades, drills and a pick axe to make the holes for the bulbs, finding two rails from the railroad buried, which were sent to the city’s recycling area. After adding peat moss and fertilizer, they planted 775 bulbs, which will bloom in the spring of 2017. There are plans to remove the rest of the honeysuckle and plant more bulbs next year.
