If things had worked out as planned, Friday night’s season opener with Piqua’s five former NFL players returning to Alexander Stadium/Purk Field would have been made even more special my the new scoreboard and video board.
But, sometimes the ability to come up with plan B — and turn it into plan A-plus is an even more important ability.
As a result, when the video board arrives in about a month — it will be even better than originally planned.
“Mr. Purk (former Piqua athletic director Ed Purk) and I worked very closely with the distributors,” Piqua athletic director Chip Hard said. “It was supposed to be here for our first scrimmage. And the scoreboard was. It became obvious as time went on that the video board wasn’t going to be here on time.”
Instead of getting angry — Hare made sure Piqua ended up with an even better deal for the future.
“What can you do?,” Hare said. “You can get mad and yell and scream.”
Or you can negotiate a better deal.
“Before, the scoreboard was going to be similar to the last one with the two video boards,” Hare said. “Now, we are going to get one that is going to be almost as long as the scoreboard. We are going to get the highest clarity they offer. So, we are going to end up with a bigger board with better clarity.
“The only bad thing is it won’t be here until the end of September. Hopefully, by next season, people will forget.”
Or appreciate what a little patience and negotiating got them.
