Russia gets win
RUSSIA — The Russia baseball team evened the score with Fort Loramie, defeating the Redskins 3-2 Monday in SCL action.
“Every game with Ft. Loramie goes down to the wire,” Russia coach Rick Gold said. “They are an excellent team. Connor Rose pitched well for them, as did Grant Olberding in relief. We were able to take advantage of a couple of their mistakes to get an early lead.”
Isaiah Counts pitched a four-hitter, striking out six and walking one.
“Isaiah Counts did a great job on the hill, striking out six,” Gold said. “He got the first batter out five of the seven innings he pitched, and that really helped.”
Russia scored in the first, when Nolan Francis reached on an infield single and came around to score on Bailey Francis’ ground out.
In the second, Jordan Gariety singled and scored on Drew Sherman’s triple.
Russia made it 3-0 in the third when when Bryan Drees’ bases-loaded grounder scored Cole McEldowney.
Fort Loramie scored two runs in the sixth to make it interesting.
“In the bottom of the sixth, we made a couple of defensive mistakes that Loramie took advantage of,” Gold said. ” In the top of the seventh, they put their first two hitters on base, and we went to Nolan Francis. He was able to get a pop up on a sacrifice bunt and a game ending ground ball double play to Bryce Cordonnier to Cole McEldowney to Isaiah Counts to end the game.
“Isaiah has gotten better and better each outing, and Nolan has came in relief in two tough situations the past week and has been unbelievable. It was a great win for us.”
Sherman led Russia’s seven-hit attack, going 2-for-3.
