MARIA STEIN — Megan Campbell always wanted to continue her involvement with volleyball through coaching, and now she’ll get a chance with one of the most prestigious programs in the state.

Campbell, a 2010 Versailles High School graduate, has accepted the head coaching position for the Marion Local varsity volleyball team. Marion Local will conduct a school board meeting today in which her hiring is scheduled to be approved by the school board.

“I’m really excited and looking forward to it. I was so excited and so pumped when I got the job,” Campbell said. “To get a job in the (Midwest Athletic Conference) and especially at Marion Local is such an honor.”

Campbell is a senior at the University of Dayton and is scheduled to graduate in May with degrees in math and education. Currently she’s searching for a high school math teaching position in the area back home.

The daughter of Rocky and Jane Campbell was a three-sport athlete for Versailles in volleyball, basketball and track and field. As a senior was named the MAC’s volleyball player of the year and was named first team all-Ohio by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association among many other accomplishments.

She went on to Dayton where she played the past four seasons for the Flyers as a middle blocker. She was named first team all-Atlantic 10 three times and was named third team all-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2011 among other honors.

“I love the game of volleyball, and it’s my dream to share my passion with everyone else,” Campbell said. “It just brings so much joy to my life, and I want to share that passion and joy with everyone around me.”

The Marion Local coaching position is her first head coaching opportunity. She’s helped coach at camps at Dayton, at YMCAs and back home, she said, but Marion is the first time she will lead her own program.

Campbell will replace Amy Steininger as Marion Local’s coach. Steininger stepped down following the 2013 season in which she led the Flyers to their second consecutive Division IV state championship and fifth state title since 2007.

With five championships, Marion is tied for the sixth most volleyball state titles in Ohio High School Athletic Association history. The Flyers also have the most championships since 2000.

“Everyone in the MAC, everyone in Ohio, knows what a high standard they play there,” Campbell said.

Campbell knows it will be a challenge to continue the high standard Steininger established at Marion Local, but she’s up to the challenge, she said.

The coaching staff at Marion Local under Campbell will include some of Steininger’s former assistants plus some new additions, she said. The Versailles graduate will align her philosophy with what’s been done in the past at Marion, she said, with emphasis on hard work and dedication.

“We’re going to pride ourselves in working hard as they have in the past,” she said.

Campbell has been around the Marion Local program for a couple weeks and met many people including most of her future players, she said. It was evident that they’re willing and eager to work hard, she said, and hold themselves to a high standard.

“I’ve been around the Marion program just two weeks, and I’ve already fallen in love with it,” Campbell said.

It won’t be difficult to switch allegiances to Marion Local, one of Versailles’ biggest rivals, Campbell said.

She’s looking forward to playing her former high school and coach Karla Frilling, who is a Marion Local graduate and coached Campbell during her senior year at Versailles.

“I’m looking forward to playing there,” Campbell said. “It will be a big, intense match. It’s kind of ironic how it worked out, but everything happens for a reason I like to say.”
