The Piqua girls basketball team stayed close for much of the game.

But, Troy opened up a lead in the fourth quarter and went on to a 39-28 victory in GWOC North action Wednesday night.

“I thought the kids played hard,” Piqua coach Rory Hoke said. “We didn’t attack their zone like we need to able to. We are going to have work on that night for the next game. We knew they were going to be all over Macy (Yount), but we just didn’t move like we needed to.”

Piqua had taken an early 2-0 lead on free throws by Katie Allen and Kayla Schrubb.

But, despite a Yount triple, Piqua trailed 10-5 after one quarter.

After getting down 18-10, Allen hit a jumper to close the first half with Piqua trailing 18-12 and Yount scored the first two points of the second half to make it a four-point game.

A three by Sierra Besecker helped Troy open the lead to 21-14.

A three by Yount and a basket by Schrubb had Piqua within 25-19, before Kennedi Kyzer hit a three at third quarter buzzer to make it 28-19 going to the final eight minutes.

Troy continued the run with the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to make it 38-21 and put the game away.

The Lady Trojans beat Piqua’s defense with some great passes in the middle to create easy shots.

“We knew they were going to penetrate to the middle,” Hoke said. “And we knew we couldn’t get help by leaving (Kennedi) Kyser. But, we just got out of position and they were able to take advantage of it.”

The Lady Indians, who were seven for 17 from the line and 14 for 32 the last two games, had just three players score in the game.

Yount scored 13, while Schrubb shook off an injury late in the second quarter to score nine points in the second half and finish with 12. Allen had the other.

“Kayla (Schrubb) battled out there,” Hoke said. “They all did. The effort was there.”

Kyzer led the Lady Trojans with 12 and Besecker added nine.

Despite 20 points from Maddy Curtner, the Piqua girls lost a JV heartbreaker in overtime 43-39.

Piqua will host Meadowdale at Edison Community College Saturday. The JV games tips at 11 a.m.
