GERMANTOWN — Against some strong competition that included Graham’s A and B teams, Northmont, Tecumseh and Moeller, the Piqua wresting team finished sixth out of 14 teams Saturday at the Valley View Invitational.

“I felt like we wrestled to our ability,” Piqua coach Scott Kaye said. “I don’t think we won any matches that surprised us, but we won all the matches that we should. And that is something you want to see. When we should have won a match we did.”

While, Hunter Bryant (145) suffered his first loss of the season in finishing second to lead Piqua, it came against one of the best high school wrestlers in the country.

After two pins and a 6-1 decision over Justice Brewer of Preble Shawnee, Bryant faced Micah Jordan of Graham.

Jordan recorded a pin at 2:51, midway through the second period.

“He lost to the number one guy in the country,” Kaye said. “Micah (Jordan). Hunter (Bryant) embraced the challenge and I thought he did a good job. He was a great match for him to have.”

Desmond Carter (220) had a third-place finish, while Andrew Bolin (126), Blake Wright (160) and Jake Hetzler (285) all finished fourth.

Carter, after being pinned in his opening match, won four straight matches to finish the day, recording three pins and a major decision.

Bolin took a similar path. After losing his match, he recorded four straight pins.

“Andrew (Bolin) just dropped down a weght class,” Kaye said. “Those guys both did a great job coming back after losing their first match. They won the kind of matches they need to win and that was good to see.”

Wright recorded two pins, including one to get in the third-place match, before losing by major decision.

“Blake (Wright) just quietly went about his business and got himself into a placement match,” Kaye said. “He had a good day. I think he corrected some of the mistakes he has been making.”

Hetzler finished 2-2, with both of his wins by pin.

“Jake (Hetzler) lost a couple matches that he could have won,” Kaye said. “He is coming on and continues to get better.”

Going 2-2 with one pin were Brandon Gist (132) and Caje Kindred (138).

Jerry Sanders (120) was 1-2 with a pin. Going 1-2 were Mike Clark (106) and Jesse Ceyler (106).

Also wrestling were Nick Baker (113), Kadale Atkins (120), Brennan Hicks (138) and Darien Tipps-Clemons (182).

Piqua will wrestle at Sidney Wednesday to makeup a match from earlier this season.
