MIAMI COUNTY - Miami County deputies were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 66 and Miami-Shelby Road at 4:57 a.m., Thursday, on the report of an injury crash involving a motorcycle.

The operator of the 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, Joseph S. Stanley, age 24, of 1718 Amherst St., Piqua, was found deceased from injuries sustained in the crash. The operator of the 2008 Ford F-150 pick-up truck, James E. Westfall Jr., age 58, of 318 Taylor St., Bradford, was not injured but was transported to the hospital by medic complaining of chest pains. Miami County crash re-constructionists responded to process the scene and investigate the crash.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the Ford pick-up truck was traveling eastbound on Miami-Shelby Road and had stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of State Route 66. The Ford pick-up truck then proceeded eastbound into the intersection and into the path of the 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle which was northbound on State Route 66.

Stanley was not wearing a motorcycle helmet. Westfall was wearing a seatbelt. Speed does not appear to be a factor. Dr. Huffman, Miami County Coroner, ordered Mr. Stanley’s remains to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.
