COLUMBUS — A pair of area high school graduates helped lead the Ohio State women’s track and field team to a third-place finish at the LSU Battle on the Bayou last weekend in Baton Rouge, La.


Junior Katie Borchers, a Russia High School graduate, and sophomore Tammy Berger, a Versailles High School graduate, both competed in the 1,500-meter run and both placed in the top five. Borchers placed fourth with a personal-record time of 4:26.48 — the third-fastest time in school history. Berger finished fifth in a personal-best time of 4:30.01


LSU won the event with 180 points. Kansas finished second with 133 points and Ohio State was third with 109.5 points.


Ohio State will host the Jesse Owens Track Classic April 18-19 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.


Casey Yingst


LIMA — Yingst, a Covington High School graduate, is amongst the team leaders for the University of Northwestern Ohio softball team this season.


Yingst, a freshman, is has started all six of the Racers’ games so far this season. She’s batting .455 with a pair of doubles and a team-high eight runs batted in. She’s also pitched in a pair of games so far this season, with one start. Yingst is 1-0 with a 3.38 earned run average. She’s struck out six and walked two.


Chloe Shell


BLUFFTON — Shell, a Covington High School graduate, allowed just one unearned run in leading the Bluffton softball team to a 9-1 victory over rival Defiance recently.


Against Defiance, Shell went the distance in the five-inning contest, giving up just two hits and the one, unearned run. She struck out three and walked three.


For the season, Shell has appeared in 16 games and made 16 starts. She’s 7-5 with a 3.33 earned run average. She’s struck out 43 and walked 32. She’s also pitched six complete games and has one save on the season.
