TROY — Residents of Troy voted not to support the city council ordinance to hire part-time firefighter, paramedics or EMTs for the Troy Fire Department.
Issue 15’s Troy Referendum was voted down with 3510 No votes for 54 percent of the vote; 46 percent Yes. The unofficial voting results state there were 6511 total votes cast.
In July 2014, city council approved the ordinance to establish wage rates for part-time employees at the fire department.
The city’s firefighter union filed for referendum to repeal the ordinance stating they were not consulted about the proposal, questioned the hiring of part time employees for the job and argued any part-time uniformed employees would have to be represented by the union.
