To the Editor:

The loss of a loved one is never easy to deal with. Our family recently suffered the loss of our beloved mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend, Dorothy Hollopeter. She suffered a massive stroke and was treated with the utmost care by the Covington Rescue Squad crew, who safely transported her to Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. There, we were given the devastating news that she would not recover and time was short.

The hospital employees, from the emergency room to the progressive care unit, were exceptional. They tended to Dorothy’s every need, as well as to our family’s every need. They cared for her and for our family as if we were their own family members. They treated Dorothy with dignity and respect and, most of all, they cared about our family and how we would cope with her loss, especially at this joyous time of year. One hospital employee even placed into our hands a pocket poem she had received after the loss of a loved one and assured us it would help in the coming days.

The care Dorothy received from the Covington Rescue Squad and Upper Valley Medical Center was exceptional, not just during her last days, but every time she was in need of their services. Hospice of Miami County compassionately cared for Dorothy and our family. The hospice employees explained every detail of every aspect of certain death thoroughly and understandably and, most of all, with caring and compassion. No one and nothing can fill the void left by Dorothy’s passing, but we take great comfort in knowing that if another loved one is in peril, he or she will be in good hands with the Covington Rescue Squad, Upper Valley Medical Center or Hospice of Miami County. Wishing we could name each and every one of you who assisted our family, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for caring not only for our dear loved one, but for us as her family members.
