NEW MADISON - Kayla Linkous, 20, said she was getting ready for bed around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning when she heard something and went outside to check it out; that’s when she saw flames coming from the house and called 911.

“At first, I honestly thought ‘Oh, it can’t be that bad,’” Kayla recalled. “As soon as I got outside, I knew it was serious, and I knew I needed to get everyone out of the house and get help.”

Eleven fire departments responded to the fire that rendered the house a total loss, said Chief Scoob Cook, New Madison Fire Department. There were 80 firefighters, as well as numerous community members on scene to assist, he added. A firefighter and a civilian were treated for non-serious injuries, one transported, the other treated at the scene, said Jerry Holsapple, New Madison Fire Department.

“Without the community, my house would be flat to the ground right now,” Kayla commented. “Everyone pulled together to help, and we were able to get some of our stuff out while it was safe.”

Some of those things included family photos, clothing, and basketball trophies, one of the reasons Kayla and Colton Linkous were home while their mom, Christy and her husband Eric Sarver, were on vacation in Florida, witnesses shared.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined as the incident is still under investigation with the Ohio State Fire Marshal. The Darke County Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.
