Firefighters battle a large structure fire at the former Piqua Fish & Ice Company on Ohio Avenue in the Shawnee section of Piqua on Friday. The alarm was sounded around 4 p.m. A Piqua police unit was first on the scene. He reported smoke and flames showing. The fire department arrived moments later and immediately called in all personnel from all three shifts. A full response from both Covington and Casstown was requested for mutual aide. The fire was a defensive battle from the onset. Firefighters were hampered by explosions from inside the building and power lines that began to short out and arch as flames burned around them and intense heat. The fire was brought under control by around 5:45 p.m. There were no injuries reported. Investigators are looking in to the cause of the fire. The building was used as storage and it is reported that a small apartment in the rear of the structure was occupied by a single resident. She was able to escape the building.
