PIQUA —Piqua Board of Education approved a three-year contract for a new assistant superintendent on Thursday.


David A. Larson, current superintendent of Covington Schools, will begin his duties for the Piqua district Aug. 1.


Larson served as middle school principal for Covington, K-12 principal for Russia Local Schools and middle school social studies teacher at Tipp City Exempted Village Schools prior to taking Covington’s superintendent position. Larson received his graduate degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton and his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University.


“I am very excited about joining the Piqua City School District team. I look forward to assisting the district in the progressive, creative, and student centered initiatives currently underway. Piqua has a strong community tradition with great school support. I hope my experience as an educator and leader will help the district in the mission of providing Piqua students with the best possible opportunities to become responsible citizens through an excellent educational experience. I am eager to work in a position where I get more direct interaction with student learning and instruction,” Larson said.


The search committee consisted of the following individuals: Andy Hite/Board President, Lori Webster/Board Vice President, Rick Hanes/Superintendent, Jeremie Hittle/Treasurer, Kim Piper/Director of Student Services, Dustin Hornbeck/PHS Teacher and Piqua Education Association President, Roger Ely/District Business Coordinator, Mindy Gearhardt/Principal, Favorite Hill Primary School, and Darrell Hite/Assistant Principal, Piqua High School.


“We are pleased to welcome Mr. Larson to Piqua City Schools,” said Hite, board president. “The experience and enthusiasm that he brings to the position will enable us to build on the good work that is currently being done. As the newest member of the Piqua team we welcome his contribution to the many great things that are happening in Piqua City Schools to provide our students with outstanding educational opportunities.”


Roger Ely added, “Mr. Larson’s previous administrative experience, along with a heartfelt passion to see students achieve success, will be a great fit to our administrative staff. We are excited to welcome him to the team!”


“David Larson will be an excellent addition to the PCS team. He has a proven track record of success in education and has a passion for working with kids,” Hite said.


Hanes extends his appreciation to the search committee for their input, time and hard work assisting in the search. “We are very excited to have David become a part of our team of educators. He joins a quality professional staff devoted to delivering the best education in the Northern Miami Valley for our students.”


David, his wife Rachel, and their two children, Mary, 5, and Alice, 3, look forward to joining the Piqua community.
