PIQUA — A slick and slippery East Ash Street bridge resulted in a traffic crash Thursday morning that sent two local men to the hospital with injuries.

At approximately 10:21 a.m. a 1997 Toyota 4Runner being operated by William Howard, 67, of Piqua, was travelling eastbound across the bridge when he hit a slick spot, spun around and careened into another vehicle, a Chevy Silverado, said Piqua police officer Miles Gearing.

Howard, and his passenger, Bufford Bolin of Piqua, were transported by Piqua medics to the Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

Howard was cited for failure to maintain control of his vehicle, Gearing said.

The driver of the Silverado, identified as Orville Shoopman, was not injured as a result of the crash.

Shoopman was travelling westbound across the bridge when the out-of-control vehicle struck the front of his vehicle.

All three men were wearing their seat belts, authorities said.

Gearing said the crash is an important reminder for winter weather driving, especially driving on bridges.

“Just remember to take it easy on the bridges,” he said. “Even when the rest of the roads are clear, bridges ice over quicker than the roads so watch your speed on bridges.”
