City receives exercise equipment for health-wellness clinic

PIQUA — After plugging in some information — from weight to age — Marc Agnone, commercial sales rep for Tiger Joe’s Fitness Equipment out of Dayton, was on his way Thursday morning. At least as on his way as possible on a recumbent exercise bike, just one of five new pieces of exercise equipment that arrived late last month for city employee use.
While not dressed for the exercise occasion in a sweater and wool pants, Agnone was both a beacon of good physical health and a wealth of information. Explaining to the city staff that surrounded him on how to use the equipment so as to get the best and safest workout. From chest presses to leg extensions or bicep curls on one machine to the ease of a total body elliptical or the aforementioned recumbent.
Looks like city staff are well on their way to a healthier lifestyle.
“This was the first day that Marc was available to demonstrate all the pieces of equipment but many have already come up and used it,” said Elaine Barton, director of human resources, on city staff having already taken advantage of the new exercise machines housed on the third floor of the government complex. An area that is still under construction for not only the work out area but a wellness center complete with a clinic as has been noted on several occasions as a potential in the city’s future.
Thanks to Anthem’s wellness initiative funding, the city was able to purchase the five pieces with Tiger Joe’s delivering and setting up all the equipment. The spacious third floor interior says Barton could also be used for Zumba or other exercise classes, the area already well-stocked with mats, free weights, a jump rope and more.
“If employees participate in wellness initiatives or activities then they get so much money into their health savings or reimbursement account,” said Barton of bonuses both in personal health and on the wallet. “We’re just happy to have the equipment and people use it. I’ve heard a lot of good comments.”
According to Agnone, having exercise equipment on-site for employee use is a growing trend for area businesses.
“It’s something that really reduces health care costs,” said Agnone with more active employees equating to less sick days, a huge savings, but that’s not all. “Everyone can laugh and have fun, makes for more of a team and helps you enjoy your employer more. It increases job joy.”
