MIAMI COUNTY —The Miami County Agricultural Society was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Agriculture last month and plans are underway to add to the fairgrounds facilities.
The MCAS will match the grant with another $50,000 to build a new restroom/shower facility near the horse arena as well as install an LED message board to promote the fairgrounds various activities throughout the year.
MCAS secretary and manager Jill Wright said the grant was awarded to the county’s agriculture society this June.
“Ever since they tore down the restrooms (near the horse arena) several years ago, we knew we’d like to put in restrooms out there,” Wright said. “This is just a great way to kick start it. With campers out there, they have to walk up to the Duke Lundgard building…our hopes are we can rent that area a little more because they’ve been working on the horse arena and getting that going and they can have more horse shows out there. We needed it.”
Wright said the building will include handicap accessible restrooms as well as three shower shower stalls on each side for patrons. The former facilities in the horse arena were torn down several years ago. The new restroom facility is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.
“We’re hoping the first part of August have bid packets off, so by September 15 or so we can get started on this project, so by spring it will be up and going,” Wright said. “We are looking forward to it because it’s something that was needed out there for awhile now.”
The LED sign will located outside of the fair board office which will be visible from County Road 25-A.
“We will have it change for events. We only can fit one event on the board we have now so with this we can have many different rotating events on the screen,” Wright said Friday.
Other improvements to the fairgrounds this year also include the regrading of the cattle barns floors, Cove Springs Grange’s exterior paint and roof repairs, and septic system updates.
Other ground improvements includes the clearing of the north end of the fairgrounds.
