TROY — Families and young children from Miami County are invited to attend a free concert kicking off the Week of the Young Child (WOYC) on Sunday, April 10.
The concert featuring Joseph Helfrich, a folk artist from Darke County, will take place at the Troy-Hayner Cultural Center. Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers and families.
This year a local collaborative group decided to hold a concert to kick off WOYC activities at child care centers throughout Miami County. The group, the Miami County Early Childhood Focus Group, collaborates on issues affecting early childhood education. Members include Child Care Choices, Piqua Parents as Teachers, Council on Rural Services, Edison State Community College, Greene Street Day Care and the Upper Valley Career Center’s early childhood program.
The concert is being funded by a variety of sources, including “Lucy’s Gift” special grant monies from the United Way of Troy.
“We wanted to use the gift for a fun activity benefitting children in the community,” said Judy Owen, CCC executive director. Lucy’s Gift grants were distributed to all Troy United Way agencies in 2014 in memory of the late Lucy DiSalvo, longtime former executive director of the United Way of Troy.
Plans call for chairs to be set up in the courtyard of Hayner. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors to the ballroom. Children’s artwork will be on display and tables will be set up with information and giveaways. Items to be given away will include bracelets donated by Council on Rural Services and toothbrushes/toothpaste from the Miami County Dental Clinic.
Refreshments will be served.
Troy Mayor Mike Beamish has proclaimed the week of April 10-17 as Week of the Young Child locally. NAEYC suggests various theme days throughout the week, such as Music Monday, Taco Tuesday, Work together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday.
