Canning, gardening classes to be offered

PIQUA — For the second year, Mainstreet Piqua’s Piqua Community Farmers Market and the YWCA Piqua have teamed up to present workshops on how to successfully and safely can foods at home and this year, they have added a container gardening class. All classes will be held at the YWCA Piqua, 418 N. Wayne St.

The first class will be Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Farmer’s Market vendor Pam Weldy will demonstrate how to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetable plants in containers. The class is perfect for those with limited space or no garden. The cost is $10 per person.

On Tuesday, June 14, at 7 p.m. market vendor, Tina Burns, will demonstrate how to prepare cucumbers as pickles or relish using the hot water bath canning method. The class will run approximately one hour and the cost is $10.

The final class in the series will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 30, and will be taught by Weldy. She will demonstrate how to can tomatoes and salsas using the hot water bath canning method. This class will run approximately one hour and the cost is $10.

All the workshops will provide lots of opportunities to observe the methods and ask lots of questions. You do not need to be a member of the YWCA Piqua to sign up for the classes. Those wishing to sign up for the classes may drop by the YWCA Piqua or call (937) 773-6626. Payment is due one week in advance to reserve placement. Space is limited.
