PIQUA — The Piqua Chamber of Commerce is proud of its longtime tradition of providing scholarships to Piqua students pursuing music, music education or the performing arts field of study. Available grants include the Mills Brothers, Bogart Brothers and Betty Hemmert scholarship funds. Scholarship applications for those residing in the 45356 zip code area will be available through guidance counselors and the Piqua Chamber early in March.

One recipient, Dominic Bogart, continues to be active in show business. After receiving accolades at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival for his lead role in the feather film “I Am Not a Hipster,” Bogart, a 1996 Mills Brothers Scholarship winner, returned to the festival last month for the world premiere of “The Birth of a Nation.” Bogart plays Hank Fowler in this biopic about enslaved preacher-turned-revolt leader Nat Turner.

This is the latest success for Bogart, who has appeared in five feature films this year. He appears in “Sympathy, Said the Shark” which won the audience award for best feature at the Portland Film Festival and enjoyed a multi-city theatrical run and is available online. Other recent and upcoming releases include the rodeo western “Mahjong and the West,” the Syfy channel’s science fiction thriller “400 Days,” the atmospheric thriller “The Ghost and the Whale,” and “Extracted,” which currently is streaming on Netflix. Some of these films are also available on Amazon.

After earning his BFA degree in drama at the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music Bogart has kept busy on film, stage, and television. Since recurring on ABC’s “Flashfoward” as black ops soldier Keith Conner he has acted in HBO’s “The Chris Rock Show,” Destin Crettin’s and Lowell Frank’s “Deacon’s Monday and Day Labor,” “The King of Iron Town,” “Autumn Mixtape,” and “Summer Nuts”.

The son of Robert and Kathy Bogart of Houston, Dominic is a graduate of Lehman High School where he first began honing his performance skills while starring on the Lehman stage. You can follow his career on his web site, dominicbogart.com.
