Commissioners OK levy, road salt

MIAMI COUNTY — At their meeting Tuesday, the Miami County Commissioners approved the placement of a levy on the ballot in support of Riverside Developmental disabilities and accepted a quote for road salt.

This five-year, 2.5 mill levy generates $5,325,662.40 per year, which is nearly 40 percent of the agency’s operating budget. These funds also help to draw federal funding to the community, Riverside Superintendent Brian Green said.

Riverside provides services including case management, physical and occupational therapies, recreational activities, community housing coordination, employment training and placement, adult day services, and transportation. Services are provided for almost 900 people in Miami County.

“This is one of our core levies,” Green said.

This levy is a renewal and has been in place since 2002. In 2011, it was extended from a three-year levy to a five-year levy.

The commissioners also accepted a road salt quote for the 2015-2016 winter season. The county purchases salt through the Southwest Ohio Purchasing for Government (SWOP4G) cooperative group. The lowest bidder was Compass Minerals America of Overland Park, Kan., at a cost of $70 per ton.

“It’s just back to business as usual,” Sandy Curtis, administrative assistant with the Miami County Engineer’s Office, said. “We’re back down to a normal price per ton.”

Last year salt prices were up to $115 per ton, Curtis said.

Curtis also said that the county is working to compile information to submit for settlement funds that will be distributed to government entities in Ohio as part of the attorney general’s settlement with salt distributors.

Under the settlement, Morton Salt Inc. and Cargill Inc. will distribute $11.5 million to resolve allegations that they conspired to cause state and local governments to pay higher prices for rock salt.

In other business, the commissioners approved several contracts and agreements between the Family and Children First Council and other entities, including Riverside and the Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health for various services.

The commissioners authorized the submission of a grant application for the Ohio Emergency Management Agency’s 2015 Unified Hazard Mitigation Assitance Program. The amount of funding is currently unknown, the grant will be 75 percent federal funds and will require a 25 percent local match.

The board also set a bid date for the new toilet building project at Friendship Park in Bethel Township for July 28 at 9:15 a.m. in the Commissioners’ hearing room.
