PIQUA — A suspect is in custody in connection with the robbery that took place Monday morning at the Marathon gas station at the corner of Looney Road and Ash Street. James L. Mumaw III, 25, of Piqua, has been charged with second-degree felony robbery in connection with the incident and was arraigned Tuesday on the charge.
The initial report of the robbery came in at 6:41 a.m. Monday. According to Deputy Chief Marty Grove, a male came in wearing a black mask and hat and demanded money.
“He did not display a weapon,” Grove said.
According to Grove, when the clerk did not immediately open the register, the male put his hand in his pocket and reportedly led the clerk to believe that he did have a weapon. The subject then fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Piqua Police Department later received a tip from someone who had seen the suspect’s picture on social media and recognized who he thought was the suspect. By 5 p.m., the Piqua Police Department had the alleged suspect in custody.
“We have recovered articles of clothing,” Grove said. The cash taken during the incident has not been recovered. The incident is also drug-related due to statements reportedly made by Mumaw.
