MIAMI COUNTY — Tornado sirens sounded off throughout Miami County as a severe thunderstorm with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour swept through Miami County around 5 p.m.

Meteoroligist James Gibson of the National Weather Service in Wilmington said straightline winds up to 50 mph were the cause of the damage in and around Miami County. Gibson said the NWS did issue a tornado warning for northern Miami County at 5:23 p.m, and at 5:27 p.m. a cell favorable to turn into a tornado was located in Pleasant Hill. However, no tornado touched down. Damage was reported at 1945 N. Rangeline Road, Pleasant Hill.

On Wednesday evening, there were multiple reports due to motorists trying to avoid debris in the roadways around the county. Troy Fire Department medics responded to a report of an injury sustained in the Staples parking lot around 5:45 p.m. According to reports, a sign struck a van’s windshield and injured a passenger. The passenger was transported for treatment to Upper Valley Medical Center with unknown injuries.

In western Miami County, a pole barn was destroyed, scattering debris into the roadway and surrounding properties on North Rangeline Road, between Pleasant Hill and Covington. Authorities closed the intersection of State Route 718 and Harshbarger and Shiloh and Harshbarger roads for road crews to clear phone wires and barn debris.

Downed power lines were blocking traffic around the Miami County Government Center on County Road 25-A in Troy.

For today, Christmas Eve, temperatures are to be unseasonably warm with a high in the upper 50s and partly sunny skies. On Friday, Christmas Day, temperatures will again be in the upper 50s and partly cloudy.

“So, basically, warm,” Gibson said.

No more rain is expected until after midnight on Friday, but nothing to the magnitude of Wednesday evening’s storms.
