PIQUA – Three victims sustained serious injuries in a head-on crash on East U.S. Route 36 just east of Union-Shelby Road on Monday afternoon.
Crews were dispatched to the location around 1:15 p.m. on the report of a head-on crash with multiple injuries.
Miami County deputies arrived on the scene to find one victim, identified as Cheyenne Smith, 31, of New Carlisle, trapped in his SUV. Two victims in a pickup truck, Emily Mefford, the driver, 40, and Jeremy Mefford, 39, both of St. Paris, also sustained serious injured..
Piqua Fire Department medics and Rescue vehicles responded along with Fletcher Fire Department and Johnson/St. Paris rescue squad. A third squad, from Troy Fire Department, provided mutual aide.
Lt. Tom Wheeler of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said that witnesses state that the SUV driven by Smith went left of center, striking the pickup truck driven by Mefford head-on. Both vehicles remained in the roadway following the collision.
All three victims were transported to Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. Both Emily Mefford and Cheyenne Smith were transferred to Miami Valley Hospital for further treatment by CareFlight ambulance. Jeremy Mefford remains at UVMC.
A CareFlight helicopter was requested but unable to fly due to weather conditions.
Deputies closed U.S. 36 in both directions in order to investigate and, later, clean up the crash scene.
Wheeler said that there is no indication at this time that alcohol was a factor in the crash but that their investigation will check out all potential factors.
