BROWN TOWNSHIP — A two-vehicle crash on State Route 589, north of Fletcher, has left one victim dead.
The victim has been identified as Jerry Wilson, 52, of Tipp City.
Sheriff’s deputies, Fletcher firefighters and St. Paris-Johnson Twp. medics were dispatched to State Route 589, just north of Snodgrass Road shortly before 4 p.m. on the report of a crash involving a field sprayer and another vehicle. The second vehicle was reported to be fully-engulfed in flames following the impact.
The sprayer was reportedly transporting approximately 20 gallons of weed killer.
Witnesses verified that Wilson was trapped in the overturned pickup truck but emergency responders were not able to reach him until the fire was extinguished.
Chief Deputy Dave Duchak of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said that preliminary findings indicate that the large sprayer vehicle was traveling north on the highway and the pickup truck southbound when one of the vehicles drifted into the path of the other, hitting head-on.
The impact spun the sprayer around in the roadway and caused the truck to overturn against a utility pole, then burst into flames.
The driver of the sprayer was not visibly injured but was shaken up. He was transported to Wilson Hospital by St. Paris-Johnson Twp. Rescue Squad to be checked out.
Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crash reconstructionists are working at the scene to determine a caused of the fatal crash.
Dayton Power and Light was called due to burn damage to a power pole.
State Route 589 was closed for several hours as the crash was investigated and cleaned up.
