PIQUA – A man suffering a medical condition is believed to have led to a head-on crash on State Route 66 Thursday evening.

The crash occurred just north of the construction zone where the city’s new water treatment plant is to be located.

Miami County 911 received multiple calls of a northbound vehicle driving erratically in the area minutes before the crash. Deputies investigating the crash found that the driver had left the highway, come back onto the highway, and left again, before driving into a field approximately 20 yards off St. Rt. 66, did a “doughnut” and came back onto the roadway.

The driver of the second vehicle, which was southbound on St. Rt. 66, said that he saw the car coming and had stopped as he attempted to figure out what the other driver was going to do. The driver of the northbound car re-entered the roadway and ran head-on into the SUV.

The driver of the northbound car was apparently unable to remove his foot from the accelerator and his rear wheels continued to spin, burning his rear tire away and grinding several inches deep into the pavement.

A Piqua police officer was first on the scene and managed to remove the man from the car as it appeared that a fire might be imminent.

The Piqua Fire Department and a medic unit arrived, along with the Lockington Fire Department. They secured the vehicles to insure that there was no longer a risk of fire and checked out the crash victims.

The only person transported was the driver of the car. It is believed that blood-sugar issues may have led to his medical condition.

The occupants of the SUV were not transported.

The crash is under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.
