CASSTOWN — The Miami East-MVCTC FFA Chapter, in cooperation with the Miami Soil and Water Conservation District, OSU Extension — Miami County, and Miami Conservancy District will sponsor a free Water and Soil Testing Fair from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in the Miami East High School cafeteria. No reservations are needed. This is open to all Miami County residents. All testing should take about 30 minutes to complete.
Additionally, 20-minute informational and educational speakers will be in the Miami East High School Lecture hall to share valuable information while you wait for your results. At 4:30 p.m., inspector Gerry Tipton from the Miami County Health Department will present “Home Owner Well Maintenance Tips.” At 5 p.m., the Miami County Master Gardners will present “Fertilizing the Garden and Best Management Practices.” At 5:30 p.m., Amanda Bennett from the Miami Extension Office will share, “Why Soil Testing is Important.” And, at 6 p.m.. Linda Raterman from the Miami Soil and Water Conservation District will explain, “Why is Water Testing Important.”
This program will offer free iron testing of ground well water. Additionally, free water tests will determine both nitrates and nitrites are present in the well water sample. If your home’s well is more than 40 years old, is less than 50 feet deep or hasn’t been tested within the last year then bring a well-water sample to the event. The fresh sample should be collected the day of the event using fresh water, stored in a clean container, and refrigerated until the event. For further information on how to take a water sample, contact the Miami Soil & Water at (937) 335-7645.
Free soil tests will be available to test soil levels of pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Samples should be taken early so that they can air dry to a crumbly texture. Contact the Extension Office at (937) 440-3945 or firstname.lastname@example.org for further directions in collecting a sample for testing.
This project was made possible from a grant from the National FFA Organization’s Living To Serve Environmental Grant program. For more information, visit the Miami East High School website under the FFA tab or by calling (937) 335-7070, Ext. 3212, or emailing email@example.com.
