MIAMI COUNTY — A Vandalia man who attempted to steal a purse from an 88-year-old Tipp City woman was sentenced to serve a year in prison on Monday.

Last month, Donald William Johnson, 48, entered a plea of guilty on a bill of information to the felony robbery charge from the Aug. 11 incident at the Family Dollar in Tipp City.

Johnson attempted to steal the purse from an elderly woman as she exited the store. Police reports stated Johnson approached the woman, asking for $5. When she refused, Johnson grabbed her purse and tried to run away.

A maintenance man working nearby observed the incident and ran after Johnson, recovering the purse after a struggle. Johnson sustained a bite to his left arm during the altercation.

The maintenance man told police that Johnson threatened to shoot him.

Johnson was able to get to his vehicle and leave the scene. He was arrested Aug. 15.

According to reports, Johnson told police that he was high the morning of the robbery and went to Tipp City to buy more heroin. He originally planned to rob the store before deciding to rob the woman instead, he told police.

In other court news:

Farah Holter, 39, of Troy, was sentenced to served two years of community control for fourth-degree drug trafficking charges stemming from a DEA drug sweep last March.

Holter said she has been seeking treatment services since her arrest.

Troy Police Department served the search warrant at 219 E. Canal St., Troy, which resulted in the arrest of Holter and co-defendant William A. White, 43, of Troy, near an elementary school.

White has been charged manufacturing illegal drugs and possession of cocaine. A final pre-trial has been set for Nov. 14.

The cocaine was being manufactured into crack, according to authorities.

Judge Christopher Gee ordered Holter to have no contact with White while on probation. Judge Gee also ordered Holter to apply for the Drug Court program.
