MIAMI COUNTY — Finding new adventures in baking and cooking is a welcome challenged to the more mature 4-H members who participated in the annual Senior 4-H Foods and Nutrition Review at the Duke Lundgard building on Saturday.

Caitlyn Cusick, 17, of Troy, shared her love of sweet carbs with the judge and walked away the blue ribbon winner.

“I really love 4-H. It’s something I look forward to every year because of the new cooking and sewing experiences. I like doing both and I love trying new foods,” she said.

It was the first time Caitlyn had made cinnamon rolls, and decided to learn how to make a family favorite from scratch.

“(My) family eats a lot of cinnamon rolls so we tried it out because, well, why not?” she said. “I also got to learn how to make breads with filling in them which was a fun experience.”

The Troy High School senior plans to don her own dress next spring, which she modeled for judges later that evening.

“It’s a nice way to learn skills because I’m getting ready to go to college next fall so it’s a way to learn things I might use in the future,” she shared.

Cusick is a nine-year member of the Stitchin’ Sisters 4-H Club.

In between bites of his freshly made snicker-doodle cookies, which took second place, Thomas Burkett, shared his experience of participating in the annual food review.

“I entered this part of the competition mainly because I wanted to show off what I could do with cooking,” Burkett said. “Cooking in general is just fun overall, it’s more of the experience out of the cooking. You get to learn more about how to basically survive along the cooking world.”

Burkett is a 10-year 4-H member and will be a freshman at Tippecanoe High School this fall.

“I just love everything about it. We get to go out for the fair. This is the highlight of the year,” he said.

The third place winner in the senior food review was Lauren Hebert, a five-year member of the Stitchin’ Sisters 4-H Club. She was unavailable for comment for this story.
