MIAMI COUNTY — Before they cowboy up and ride away, Miami County Fair’s horsemen and women saddled up for a morning full of barnyard fun.

The annual event pits 4-H horse clubs against one another in a series of horse play games.

Recent Troy High School graduate Lane Stewart, 18, completes his 4-H career this year. He is a seven-year member with the Lucky Horseshoes 4-H Club. Stewart shared how he enjoys the Super Stars games before kicking off the week of competing.

“I like the activities and I like how it brings our club together,” Stewart shared. “I like ‘Hoof-Pick in the Straw’ (game) because we usually win it!”

Stewart will compete with his horse “Cole” in English and Western showmanship, Western Pleasure and other events.

Stewart said he enjoys fair week, spending time with his friends before heading off to his freshmen year of college at Wright State University.

Krystal Bauman, 15, of Casstown, said she enjoys working together as a team with her other Ride On 4-H Club members before they suit up to compete in English, Western, drill team and contest classes later this week.

“I like the game where everybody had to dress up because it’s fun to watch,” Bauman said.

Marty Desautels, 10, of Troy, also is in the Ride On 4-H Club and used his own stealth maneuvers during the saddle wagon game.

A bale of straw is placed on a toy wagon. A saddle is placed on top and teams race to see who can get to the finish line — without bucking someone off.

“I sat on it and they brought me back home,” Desautels said.

Desautels will be competing with his horse “Curly” in Western Pleasure and Fun Day events on Thursday.

“I’ve always liked horses because they are fun.”
