PIQUA — The Piqua Police Department were searching for a local boy believed to be a runaway until he turned himself in on Wednesday afternoon.

Joseph Marks, 15, of Piqua, had been missing for a week having left his home the evening of June 23. He was believed to have run away from his residence that evening. His whereabouts while he was gone are currently unknown, though it was believed that he had not left the city.

Piqua Chief of Police Bruce Jamison explained Wednesday morrning that runaways are considered to be at risk and the police department made every effort to find Marks.

“Any time a kid goes missing we work hard to get them back quickly,” Jamison said.

Jamison also noted Wednesday morning that people who withheld information about Marks’ whereabouts could have been charged.

“If they are doing anything to interfere with the legal custody of this child, they’re subject to criminal prosecution,” Jamison said.

Jamison confirmed that the same went for any friends of Marks who may have been hiding him or who may have known where Marks was at but were not coming forward with the information.

Angela Marks, Joseph Marks’ mother, said that her son has never run away before and that when he left the house sometimes, he usually just walked around the block before going back home. Last Thursday night, though, he did not come back.

“I know that he just came home,” Marks said Wednesday afternoon. Marks added that having him home again was a “huge relief.”

Marks thanked the Piqua Police Department for their diligence and keeping her informed of their efforts. Marks also thanked the Piqua community for their help and support.

“It was absolutely amazing (to have) that kind of support,” Marks said.
