Altrusa awards literacy grants

TROY — The Altrusa International of Troy, Ohio awards 22 literacy grants. As a result of the successful Bee For Literacy held in March each year, a total of $4886.12 was distributed to the following 2016 spelling bee grant recipients:

Marie Carity, Miami East MVCTC–FFA; Stephanie Blackton, Miami East Elementary; Kate Shaffer, Covington Elementary; Kelly Gessner, Covington Elementary; Paula Jurgens, Covington Elementary; Alissa Wesbecher, Piqua Springcreek Elementary; Ruth Scott, Troy Lunch Club; Judy Owen, Child Care Choices; Heather Mills, St. Patrick Catholic School; Laura Austerman, St. Patrick Catholic School; Heidi Roll, St. Patrick Catholic School; Jody Weber, Concord Elementary, Troy City Schools; Troy-Miami County Public Library, Dolly Partin Imagination Library; Rosemary Frey, Miami County ESC; McKenzie Costello, Van Cleve Sixth Grade, Troy City Schools; Liberty Bowman, Van Cleve Sixth Grade; Alison Osborne, Van Cleve Sixth Grade; Miami County Park District; Jenna Weber, Cookson Elementary, Troy City Schools; First Presbyterian Church; Jackie Thase-Burch, Piqua City Schools; Brukner Nature Center.

The Altrusa Club of Troy was chartered on June 30, 1948. Its longest continuing project has been Mobile Meals since 1973. The first Bee For Literacy was held in 1993 and has raised more than $94,000 to benefit local literacy projects.
