UNION TOWNSHIP — One person is dead following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Rangeline and Markley Roads on Wednesday night.
Miami County deputies, along with the Union Township Life Squad, West Milton Fire Department and Laura Fire Department, were dispatched to the crash just after 10:30 p.m.
West Milton Police responded as mutual aid and arrived within minutes.
CareFlight was initially put on stand-by but asked to stand down when it was determined that the passenger in one of the vehicles was deceased.
The deceased victim was identified as Deborah Kay Ritter, 64, of West Milton. The driver of the car was David F. Pope, 53, also of West Milton. Pope was transported to an area hospital by the Union Township Life Squad. His injuries are not life-threatening.
The second vehicle, a Ford van, was driven by Cheryl Kaufman, of Ludlow Falls. Neither she, or her passengers, Atley King, 19, of Covington, and Lukas Tebics, 17, of Ludlow Falls, sustained any injuries.
All of the crash victims were wearing seat belts.
Chief Deputy Dave Duchak said that the van driven by Kaufman was following another vehicle northbound on Rangeline Road when the lead vehicle slowed and turned east onto Markley. Pope’s vehicle was sitting at the stop sign and as soon as the first vehicle made the turn, Pope apparently pulled from the stop sign and into the path of Kaufman’s vehicle. The impact sent both vehicles into a utility pole and guy wire.
Duchak said that the preliminary cause of the crash is listed as failure to yield the right of way.
The crash remains under investigation by the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.
