PIQUA — A Piqua deputy police chief was demoted to the rank of lieutenant after an apparent off-duty incident.

Rick Byron, who was appointed to the position of Deputy Police Chief on Feb. 29, was involved in “an off-duty offense,” said Piqua Law Director Stacy Wall.

Wall said that Byron was place on paid administrative leave while an internal investigation was undertaken by the police department.

Chief Bruce Jamison said that Byron, who has been with the department since 1999, “Did not successfully complete probation.” He has since resumed his duties as a lieutenant in the road section of the department.

Jason Preston has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Police Chief, to fill the open position. Preston has been with the Piqua Police Department since 2004 and will be in charge of the Road Division.
