PIQUA — As prom season comes to a close, each school has crowned their king and queen. In a fitting finale to all area proms, the Miami County Education Service Center hosted a multiple disabilities prom for special needs students from all schools in Miami County.

Students, parents, caregivers and staff met in the banquet center at the Miami Valley Centre Mall on Friday for the second annual Multiple Disabilities Prom.

Nearly every school in Miami County was represented at the event which featured dancing, a catered lunch, the crowning of prom royalty, and enjoying each other’s company.

Miami County School Superintendent Tom Dunn said, “They (employees and volunteers) really put a lot of work into this.”

Among those who make the prom, as well as every-day life, happen for the M-D students are the dozen, or so, Peer Mentors, students from Piqua, Troy, and Tipp City High Schools who volunteer their time to assist M-D students with all needs, from eating to dancing with each other on the dance floor.

As with all proms, votes were tallied and a king and queen chosen to represent Miami County. This year, Chelsea Jenkins of Piqua was crowned Prom Queen and Christian Alexander was chosen Prom King.
