Earl and Carol Burley of Troy were crowned the 2016 Troy Strawberry Festival’s “Golden Couple” on Saturday. The couple has been married for 51 years.

TROY —Their marriage is more like “Let’s Make a Deal” than “Wheel of Fortune” or “Family Feud.”

The first time was a charm for Earl and Carol Burley, of Troy, who were crowned the 2016 Troy Strawberry Festival’s “Golden Couple” on Saturday.

It was the first time the Burleys had participated in the pre-festival event held at the historic Troy-Hayner Cultural Center.

The Burley’s read each other’s minds answering a variety of tongue-and-cheek questions during the “Not-So Newly Wed Game” hosted by Mayor Michael Beamish along with the community volunteers who helped the couples during the game.

When asked what kind of dog their husbands would be, Earl quipped he’d be the family’s dachshund which wasn’t an option — but answered correctly that he’d most likely be a bulldog and stayed out of the doghouse when his wife’s answer matched his.

Earl served as chairman for the Troy Strawberry Festival in 1984 and the couple recalled memories of making strawberry donuts on the levee many years ago.

“It was our first time doing this — we just came for the parting gifts,” Carol said with a laugh.

Earl shared how they were involved in the festival’s many activities for more than 18 years in various ways.

“We were music parents and did the donuts for the first time on the levee — so we’ve been involved quite a bit,” she shared.

So what is the Burley’s secret to staying happily married for 51 years?

“Having respect for one another is one thing,” Carol advised.

“Never go to bed mad — always kiss goodnight,” Earl shared.

“You might be a little angry…” Carol said with a laugh.

“Well, you always kiss goodnight or you won’t get a good night’s sleep,” Earl quipped back as they both laughed together.

The Burley’s marriage of 51 years may look as though it is still in its infancy compared to the Rasor’s marriage of more than seven decades. Glenna and Roger Rasor received the Troy Strawberry Festival’s Queen’s Court “Spirit Award” for their participation. The Tipp City couple have been married since 1943.

The following couples also participated in the 2016 Golden Couple contest: Carl and Linda Sexauer, of Piqua; Al and Joy Mader, Troy; Pat and Jim Morris, of Troy; Glenna and Roger Rasor, of Tipp City; Gary and Sue Campbell of Troy; Richard and Gayle Hawkins, of Troy.
