PIQUA — Two outstanding local volunteers will be honored by The Piqua Community Foundation with new community services awards on Thursday, May 12.

Susanne Pummill of the Salvation Army and Tom Westfall of Music Warehouse will be the first to receive respectively the Margaret W. Hinsch and Scott J. Hinsch Community Service awards.

These awards differ from existing recognition programs because the honorees are selected based on activities done on behalf of one single organization in one specific calendar year. In addition, the non-profit groups whose nominees were selected will each be awarded a $1000 grant from the Hinsch Family Fund of The Piqua Community Foundation, in recognition of that outstanding volunteer.

Susanne Pummill, a retired school cafeteria cook, tirelessly volunteers to provide meals for the Salvation Army summer feeding program. In 2015, she prepared more than 8,400 meals that were then delivered and served to children at various sites in Piqua during the 12-week program. Tom Westfall, creator of Music Warehouse, dedicated the summer of 2015 to choreographing, teaching and directing Warehouse’s 20th anniversary show, “I Was Here.” The show involved youth (third grade through college age) as well as numerous Music Warehouse alumni who returned for the performances at Hance Pavilion in August.

The awards were created by the Hinsch family to honor the memory of their parents, the late Margaret and Scott Hinsch, who were active volunteers in Piqua for many years. John and Marsha Hinsch of Piqua, and Dr. Linda and Bob Campbell of Kansas, have established a fund in The Piqua Community Foundation to provide the monetary grants to the local non-profit organizations. The awards will continue be made annually to one man and one woman volunteer.

Family and friends of the honorees are invited to attend the award ceremony, which will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at the YWCA Piqua. The awards will be conferred in conjunction with The Piqua Community Foundation’s spring grant distribution.
