MIAMI COUNTY — Miami County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two men after officers stopped to help change a flat tire of a stolen car in the West Charleston Church of the Brethren parking lot on Friday.

Wesley Vertrees, 43, and Clarence Hughes, 50, both of Dayton, are currently incarcerated in the Miami County Jail following a road deputies investigation of a suspicious vehicle on the side of the road at the intersection of State Routes 571 and 202 early Friday morning.

Both Hughes and Vertrees were charged with fourth-degree felony receiving stolen property and fifth-degree theft.

Deputies stopped to assist Wesley Vertrees who told the officer the vehicle broke down and he needed to change the tire. The deputy ran the plate number, which stated the car was stolen out of Oakwood. Vertrees also had a warrant out for his arrest out of Franklin County.

After further investigation, the county’s K-9 unit responded to the scene and located the second subject, Clarence Hughes, lying in the ditch south on State Route 202.

The owner of the vehicle was contacted and picked up the car and tools which were also stolen from the property.
