PIQUA — Too small of a town for a taxi service? Not this city. From regular taxi needs to food delivery, Need-a-Lift Transpo is breaking into the local area’s taxi and transportation market with a variety of services.

“We started basically taking people to and from church services,” owner Freedom Shubert said. From growing out of their church called N3w G3n3ration — or New Generation Church — they realized that there was a need for transportation services in Piqua and the surrounding area.

Need-a-Lift Transpo recently celebrated their one-year anniversary after opening the business in August 2015. Their business is open to any people in need of a taxi service in the area, but they offer a flat rate of $7.50 for taxi rides within Piqua as well as a discount rate of $5 per ride for those needing transportation to or from bars in Piqua.

“One of the biggest things that I think that all of our drivers love is that we are helping in a big way to transport people to and from our local bars at discounted rates, and we like to believe that goes a long way toward reducing drunk driving,” Shubert said.

Need-a-Lift Transpo also works with Premier Health, transporting patients to and from the hospital, as well as with driving people to and from the Dayton International Airport. They work mostly within Piqua and the surrounding area, but the farthest that Shubert has ever driven for a client was a 12-hour drive to Savannah, Ga.

The transportation services do not stop at simply taking people across town or to the airport. They also recently began their Taxi Food Dude service, where they transport food from restaurants to people or businesses from restaurants that do not offer their own delivery service. Those interested would first call in a pick-up order at the restaurant — such as Bob Evans or Red Lobster — and then they would call Need-a-Lift to pick up the order and deliver it to them. For people or businesses in Piqua, it is a flat delivery rate of $10.

They also offer a discount to people who need rides to and from work. The customer would pay for the ride to work, but the ride home from work would be free. Those trips are usually paid in advance, though, and Need-a-Lift Transpo works with those customers in accordance to their pay schedule with work.

“It’s been a blessing,” Shubert said. “We saw an opportunity that Piqua was in high demand of.”

A potential customer’s imagination need not be limited, though, as they are continuing to expand their business to delivering packages as well as establishing contracts with businesses to transport people for those businesses. They are also hoping to work with his wife’s business Crystal’s Creations — which provides decoration designs as well as floral arrangements for weddings, parties, and funerals — to provide chauffeur services to wedding parties or other groups.

Need-a-Lift Transpo has approximately five drivers, but they are hiring. They are hoping to expand their business into cities like Vandalia, Tipp City, West Milton, and more.

They are also a 24-hour taxi service, although they do close on Sundays at 3 a.m. and open again on Monday.
